Your Bin Numbers Are Probably a Mess

My rule: if you can't tell me roughly where a bin is just from reading the number, your warehouse bin location numbering system is broken.
How to Build It Right From Scratch

1. **Define your zones first.** Break the warehouse into logical zones — fast-movers, slow-movers, bulk, returns, hazmat. Each zone gets a prefix letter or number. 2. **Number aisles left to right, starting at the dock.** Odd numbers left, even numbers right — same system most grocery distribution centers use. There's a reason for that. 3. **Number bays front to back within each aisle.** Always start at 01, never 0. Use zero-padded two or three digit numbers so sorting in your WMS stays logical (03 sorts before 10; 3 doesn't). 4. **Number levels bottom to top.** Level 1 is always floor level. Pickers know to look down for 1, up for 4. Fast movers go at levels 2 and 3 — golden zone. 5. **Leave gaps.** Don't number 01 through 50 with nothing to spare. Go 01, 02, 03... but skip to 10, 20, 30 between sections. You'll thank yourself when you add shelving six months later.

The Label Itself Matters More Than You Think
Honestly, I've seen perfectly designed warehouse bin location numbering get destroyed by garbage labels. Here's what works:
- **Font size minimum 36pt** for the bin identifier itself. Pickers are moving fast. They shouldn't have to squint.
- **High-contrast colors by zone.** Yellow labels for Zone A, blue for Zone B. That visual cue alone cut our mis-zone picks by about 70% at one facility.
- **Barcode AND human-readable text** on every label. Don't make me explain why in 2025 we still need both.
- **Replace labels on a schedule.** Every 18 months minimum. Faded labels are silent mispick generators.
